Bomeh landfill

Beyond the smoke rising from the mound, hundreds of people work every day, sorting plastic, copper and other materials for resale.

Some families and individuals have built their entire lives at the garbage dump, forming an isolated community without access to clean water and medical care.

Exposed to smoke from burning waste, they work with bare hands, recovering materials that would otherwise go unprocessed.

The photo story portrays the will to live of the people we met over six months documenting life at Bomeh landfill, on the outskirts of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
